It’s the mom, Bastet, who gave birth to two males and one female as part of the Central African cheetah conservation program. This beautiful story became possible thanks to the meeting between Bastet and Baci, the dad of the little ones, who arrived straight from another zoo in July 2024. And we can say he didn’t waste any time! For now, these little balls of fur weigh barely 550 grams each, and they fit easily in the palm of your hand.

But the big question we're all asking: what will they be named? The mystery is still hanging in the air… The Montpellier zoo explained that their names will be chosen by the animal care teams in the coming weeks and will start with the letter G. Why G? Because it’s the 7th viable litter born at the zoo since 2015, and each generation follows the alphabetical order.

A birth full of hope

This birth is making waves because it represents a glimmer of hope for this species classified as "Vulnerable" on the extinction risk scale of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 2024, out of 41 cheetah births as part of the program...

the European, only 23 were viable. A rather concerning number that shows we need to keep up our efforts.

In any case, we can only wish the little cheetahs a happy and healthy growth… and to have names that are just as delightful!
