After eight years of renovation and five million euros invested, the Carré Sainte-Anne, a gem in the historical district of l’Écusson, is shining bright once again. This former deconsecrated church, a high spot for contemporary art, will reopen at the end of May with its beautifully restored 19th-century walls and decor.
In the center of the nave, a monumental tree imagined by JR stretches out its branches, adorned with hundreds of paper hands left by visitors. A living symbol, the installation evolves with each contribution. “Adventice,” the title of the exhibition, refers to what comes from the outside, like a seed or an outstretched hand — an invitation to see in the other a richness rather than a threat.

An inspiration rooted in local history
JR drew inspiration from the Lez River and the seeds that traveled from Spain or Africa during the Middle Ages, carried along by washed wool. These subtle plants have transformed the landscape, giving a nod to the cultural diversity that shapes Montpellier today. Since his "Portraits of a Generation" in 2004, JR has created numerous monumental installations: Pont-Neuf, Louvre Pyramid, Orient-Express… His work blends photography, collage, and urban scenography, always with an inviting spirit.
JR's tree will stand majestically at Carré Sainte-Anne until the end of the year, providing visitors with an experience that is both poetic and participatory. Between restored heritage and creative expression…;ation contemporary, Montpellier signs a bold marriage that invites you to reach out.
