It’s a name known by all. Don Juan, sometimes a character from Molière, sometimes the myth of the libertine who seduces women. For over four centuries, he intrigues as much as he fascinates. Drawing inspiration from this myth, Mozart created the opera Don Giovanni with a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, on October 29, 1787, in Prague. This dramma giocoso in two acts has stood the test of time and is now gracing the stage of the Opéra Berlioz in Montpellier with a new production from May 24 to May 31, 2026. A classic of lyrical art that you absolutely shouldn’t miss.

A grand new production
What word can describe this new version of Don Giovanni? Undoubtedly, unique. Co-produced by five French opera houses — the National Opera of Capitole in Toulouse, the Opera-Odeon in Marseille, the National Orchestra Opera of Montpellier Occitanie, the Opera of Dijon, and the Opera of Tours — this show is directed by the talented Agnès Jaoui.
By immersing us in 17th century Seville, Agnès Jaoui plays with paradoxes, creating the perfect balance between comedy and tragedy, between the power of sensuality and a society governed by Catholic morals. This emblematic story is enhanced byg> the stunning sets designed by Éric Ruf, along with the musical genius of Mozart. It is none other than conductor Benjamin Bayl who will lead the Opera Orchestra.

Familiar faces from the lyrical scene and promising young talents
A true cornerstone of the lyrical repertoire, Don Giovanni showcases prestigious artists in its main roles. Mikhail Timoshenko will play Don Giovanni, while Karine Deshayes will take on the role of Donna Elvira. Stephen Milling will lend his voice to the Commander, and Evan Hughes will be Leporello.
But the performance also highlights young talents. This is the case for Esther Tonea, who has just graduated and will portray Donna Anna, Miriam Kutrowatz in the role of Zerlina, and Frederic Jost as Masetto.
