A Toxic Algae

Ostreopsis ovata is a bit THE STAR among algae that everyone is talking about! Unfortunately, not for its beauty or wondering if it's edible, but rather to worry about its toxicity... Indeed, this microalgae can give you the flu (we can already hear you saying: how is that possible?). During a paddle or kayak ride, while swimming or even walking along the coast especially on windy days, you can come in contact with the toxin produced by Ostreopsis ovata. Very volatile, it can be present in marine spray. For the most exposed and fragile individuals, its toxins can cause itching and redness, flu-like symptoms, respiratory difficulties. These symptoms usually go away after a few days. This microalgae is also harmful to the environment and its proliferation causes the death of fauna and flora.

Affected by the toxin present in the food chain.

What does it look like and where can it be found?

Unfortunately, this algae, like us, loves calm coves and rocky shores. These are favorable environments for its development due to blooms that occur during the summer season when the waters warm up. Its presence can be observed both on the surface with brown gelatinous masses, or underwater covering the bottom with a brown film.

For many years, Osteopsis ovata has been spreading and causing concern, especially along the Basque Coast and the French Riviera. To understand its toxicity, regular analyses are carried out at several sites such as St Estève beach in Frioul and Cap Rousset in Carry Le Rouet, with one sample taken per week during the months of July and August 2024. Currently, the focus is on prevention and management.

and coexist, nothing to do against this little algae...
