« There is something Oriental about it, one walks around at ease, breathing content, the skin relaxes and breathes in the sun like a great bath of light », Flaubert said of Marseille. It must be said that the city is rather attractive, according to all the Parisians who decide to live there. It must also be said that its heights and viewpoints, its cultural and nightlife scene, its light and sunsets like nowhere else quickly win over the heart of anyone who treads on its burning ground. To help you find your way around, here are some of our favorite spots for good eating, drinking, learning and enjoying like a real Marseillais, dear, just steps away from your favorite Mercure hotels.
Our favorite spots in Marseille
Calanque de Sormiou
How can you visit Marseille without exploring the calanques? Our favorite, Sormiou, is the one.Located between the sea and the hills, and is one of the most charming! The best part? Take an electric bike and ride along the sea... pure bliss. Like all calanques, it is worth the effort, but the game is worth the candle since this little piece of paradise is a perfect postcard setting for diving. And if you feel like it, on the way, stop by the Pastré countryside, an incredible spot with 112 hectares of greenery not far from Pointe Rouge and definitely the most beautiful garden in Marseille.

Maison Empereur
Just a stone's throw from the Mercure Hotel Canebière Vieux-Port is France's oldest hardware store, a real treasure trove and almost a mandatory stop for anyone visiting the city. Maison Empereur is an institution, a true mishmash over several floors that will delight lovers of small objects: kitchen utensils, hardware products, vintage toys... Hard not to bring home some new dishes, spices, a pretty notebook, or Marseille soap.

Friche la Belle de Mai
For a dose of culture, head to la Belle de Mai, an incredible industrial wasteland that brings together artistic and cultural workspaces, performance venues, exhibitions, and concerts in a former tobacco factory. Spanning several floors, this huge creative space behind the Saint-Charles train station is a versatile venue and a true gem like few others, a real hub of creativity that will steal your heart like it did ours. We especially loved the delicious community cafeteria, but the real highlight is climbing the stairs and dancing away at one of the many concerts held on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the city at sunset. Honestly, it's pretty amazing.
