A refuge for teens struggling with school

Since October, a unique initiative has launched in Marseille: a room at the Mucem has been transformed into a classroom for teenagers dealing with school phobia. This pilot project, carried out in partnership with the national education system and the regional health agency, welcomes eight young people who, overwhelmed by anxiety, could no longer step into a traditional school. Here, there are no grades, a tailored schedule, and most importantly, a calm environment to help them rediscover their love for learning.

The Mucem, an inspiring place to relearn how to learn

In this cultural cocoon, teaching takes on a new form. Classes, taught in small groups by a French teacher, are enriched by the museum's exceptional environment. Exhibition visits, workshops with artists, and internships at the Mucem allow students to explore different disciplines while reconnecting with curiosity and the joy of learning. "Access to culture and beauty can be real therapy," says Pierre-Olivier Costa, president of the Mucem.

A step towards returning to school

The ultimate goal of this program is to help these young people find their way back to a traditional school one day. For some, like Claire*, 13 years old, this process is already starting to bear fruit. After years of bullying and dropping out, she successfully completed a trial day at a regular college. “It was so great! I can't wait to go back,” she shares enthusiastically. It's an encouraging victory that shows that innovative alternatives can really change lives.
