Who said Paris was the only artistic city in France? According to a study conducted by the team from Ruggable FR, Marseille ranks third among cities for art lovers in France! To create this ranking, Ruggable FR examined the 10 largest cities in France based on several criteria. Among them were the number of universities and art schools, the presence of famous artworks, iconic architectural buildings, and the number of art galleries. The result: with an overall score of 5.83 out of 10, Marseille surpasses Toulouse and confirms its status as a city rich in history and culture.

Marseille behind Lyon and ahead of Toulouse

Why is Marseille so loved by art enthusiasts? To start, it is home to over 21 art galleries, where curious visitors can wander and discover both local and international talents. Let's not forget the 18 buildings with remarkable architecture scattered throughout the city, like the majestic Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde that overlooks the hill. It’s also neighborhoods like La Plaine and Cours Julien, as well as Le Panier and La Belle de Mai, that are synonymous with street art.

And let's not forget that more than  11 famous works of art are scattered throughout Marseille ! They add a touch of mystery and beauty to every street corner, inviting passersby to look up and marvel. From murals to sculptures and modern installations, the city is truly an open-air museum.

On the education side, Marseille has a university and 6 art schools. Sure, it’s a bit fewer than Paris, but that doesn’t take away from the artistic buzz that fills the city. These institutions nurture a new generation of artists each year, ready to further enrich Marseille's cultural heritage.
