The people of Nantes can’t wait! The new tramway is about to arrive in the city and is set to offer a significant improvement in service for residents. Currently being built in the Alstom workshops in La Rochelle, the future trams for TAN will be delivered in spring, with the first operations expected in autumn 2023, replacing the current trams that are 40 years old.
49 new trams by 2026
Named Citadis XO5, these shiny new trams will first be tested in spring before welcoming their first passengers a few months later. In total, “49 trams will be put into service on the network by 2026 for an investment of 218 million euros,” explains Nantes Métropole. In 2027, an additional 12 trams will enhance the network as part of the rollout of the upcoming tram lines 6 and 7.”

In fact, these trams will be 46 meters long, which is 6 meters longer than the current trams. This increase in size and space will allow for 50 more passengers to board. “The layout of the platforms located behind the driver's cabins provides plenty of space to access the tram both from the front and the back, making it easier for passengers to get on,” the Metropolis explains, adding that the trams will also be brighter with “40% of the surfaces being glass thanks to taller windows.”
