As a new wave of social mobilization takes shape, authorities are stepping up security measures in Marseille. The prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône, Jacques Witkowski, has issued an order banning all demonstrations, declared or otherwise, throughout the entire department on Saturday, October 24th. This ban also applies to gatherings on subjects other than purchasing power. The prefecture justifies this decision by the looting, vandalism, and destruction that occurred last weekend, which affected numerous shops and public buildings.
A curfew extended to adults in central Marseille
Previously limited to minors around shopping streets and commercial centers, the curfew is extended during the night from Saturday to Sunday and Sunday to Monday, from 11pm to 5am. It will now apply to both adults and minors. Its perimeter
will also be extended to certain public and institutional buildings, including city halls, the prefecture and the courthouse, following damage observed at several of these sites.
Fuel, protective gear: other bans
In addition to these measures, the prefecture prohibits the wearing of personal protective equipment, such as helmets, gloves or safety goggles. The transportation of fuel is also banned, as is the sale, carrying and transportation of weapons by destination. These restrictions are part of the security system put in place
for the weekend.
