« Marseille, at the heart of the sea » is the exhibition not to be missed at the Museum Regards de Provence, with nearly 90 works to admire from the exceptional collection of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Aix-Marseille-Provence (CCIAMP). On the occasion of the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Marseille and its harbor will be in the spotlight with the organization of sailing events. It is in this spirit that the CCIAMP wished to recall the history of its territory: the resources of the sea, the port, and navigation.

A condensed summary of 26 centuries of maritime activity

.Joseph Suchet (1824-1896), Le bassin National à Marseille, 1889, Oil on canvas 256 x 454 cm

If we are lucky enough to stroll through the Regards de Provence Museum and admire this exhibition, it is all thanks to the preservation of a huge heritage collection. It dates back to the establishment of the first Chamber of Commerce in 1599, which gradually acquired numerous artifacts related to commercial activities. In the early 20th century, the Chamber opened a museum within the Palais de la Bourse, housing its entire collection before closing its doors in 2018. Today, this collection includes over 11,500 engravings, paintings, and watercolors, over 5,000 advertising posters, around 200 scale models, 4,800 various objects, accompanied by 100,000 photographs. A meticulous selection of these remarkable pieces is now on display.Experience the legendary collection through the exhibition "Marseille at the maritime heart". The exhibition revolves around the port of Marseille, its port basins, the infrastructure supporting their development, the men who work there, and the ships that evolve there. Different facets of a maritime Marseille are highlighted by artists such as Jean-Frédéric Canepa, Alfred Casile, Victor Coste, Emile Loubon, Alphonse Moutte, Raphaël Ponson, Joseph Suchet, Louis-Mathieu Verdilhan, Edmond Astruc, and many others. A cultural escapade worthy of an Olympiad!

In the weeks to come, the city of Marseille will be in the spotlight with the sailing events of the 2024 Olympics, and the exhibition will be crowded with visitors from all over the world. Both young and old are welcome: as part of the exhibition, the Museum is hosting creative workshops for children. Check out the upcoming dates here (reservation required).
