A clever critique of totalitarianism...
A Hitchcockian masterpiece released on the eve of World War II, A Woman Disappears plunges the viewer into the heart of a train traveling through Central Europe. The story follows Iris Henderson, a young English woman on the verge of...entering London to get married. During her trip, she befriends a kind and elderly governess, Miss Froy, but after a brief nap, she finds it impossible to locate her again. Miss Froy has inexplicably vanished, and no one on board seems to remember her. With the help of Gilbert, an eccentric musicologist, Iris embarks on a frantic investigation to uncover the mystery, revealing along the way a network of spies and an underlying political conspiracy.
Between manipulation, deception, and a race against time, this gripping thriller offers a subtle critique of totalitarianism and the rise of Nazism, without ever naming them directly. It provides a sharp look at a troubled era, resonating particularly at the Mucem, where there's a connection to ethnographic investigations conducted in the 1930s by the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions, the predecessor of this place.
