An unusual scene right in the heart of downtown Lyon, just in front of the Opera: curious passersby are tasting artisanal chocolates, offered by a mysterious startup called « La Bonne Truffe ». So far, nothing strange. Except that after a few bites, the surprise announcement comes: these treats were made with… dog milk. Disgust, surprise, outrage – the reactions are pouring in. But behind this unlikely tasting experience is a powerful message from PETA: why is it considered normal to consume cow's milk but unthinkable to drink dog milk?

A prank by the PETA organization
Of course, this was all just a prank. The chocolates handed out were 100% vegan, but the goal of this stunt was clear: to call out the hypocrisy of consuming dairy products from animals. After all, humans are the only ones who drink milk from another species and continue to do so into adulthood. “Why is drinking cow's milk any less disgusting than consuming dog’s milk?” questions Natasha Garnier, spokesperson for PETA France. It’s a thought-provoking question that sheds light on the reality of the dairy industry.
😱 Nous avons fait goûter aux Lyonnais des « chocolats au lait… de chienne » pour la Saint-Valentin ! 🐶

Production methods that raise questions
In its passionate message, the association reminds us that dairy cows are repeatedly artificially inseminated, with their calves being taken away shortly after birth to maximize production. This cruel cycle often ends at the slaughterhouse well before they reach their natural lifespan. Yet, these animals are capable of feeling emotions, forming bonds, and playing, just like our four-legged companions.

In August 2024, PETA had already pulled off a similar stunt by setting up a display of (fake) dead cats on the banks of the Saône in front of the Palais de Justice. It seems that Lyon has become a favored target for the activists of the organization.
