This Tuesday, Lyon-Bron recorded a delightful 16.3°C in early afternoon, smashing the previous record of 2010 which peaked at 15.5°C as explained by Actu Lyon. It felt almost spring-like, to the point where one might think that the Festival of Lights was celebrated in t-shirts. The difference from the norm is impressive: about 9°C above the expected averages.
A warmth that far exceeds the region
The rise in temperatures surpasses the national averages. According to Météo-France, the whole of France has flirted with values that are too high for the season, around +5°C on average. In Lyon, we are even a notch higher at +8°C. This phenomenon is part of a larger trend: after a record-breaking November in Europe, December seems determined to continue in the same spirit.
; follow the movement.Records piling up over the years
Since 2019, three new temperatures have already burst into the top 10 for December. And while the absolute record remains the astonishing 20.2°C on December 18, 1989, the frequency of mild spells raises some questions. On the flip side, the city has also experienced extreme cold: –9.5°C on December 9, 1945, and even –24.6°C in 1938. An almost surreal range of temperatures.
No sign of the cold returning: Météo-France forecasts 13°C on Thursday and 15°C on Friday. In short, a December beginning that flirts with spring and shakes things up. In Lyon, even winter coats feel a bit unnecessary.
