Malleval: a medieval decor frozen in time

In this village perched high above the Rhône, everything breathes authenticity. Malleval is the kind of place you’d think came straight out of a forgotten postcard. With fewer than 700 residents, winding cobblestone streets that weave between Renaissance houses, a Gothic church, and the remains of a stronghold, it’s simply charming! Nestled at the entrance of the regional natural park of Pilat, the village offers a timeless atmosphere. Just a few steps through its steep alleys make it clear that here, history unfolds under the open sky. No cars, no stress—just stone, tranquility, and breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys.

A secret waterfall worthy of an adventure movie

But the true star of the place is her: the Saut de Lorette waterfall. Nestled at the end of a slightly steep little path (put on your sneakers, not your flip-flops), this waterfall cascades down about ten meters like a little natural miracle. Surrounded by greenery, it pops out from between the rocks as a reward for the curious. It's the perfect spot for a refreshing break, a wild picnic, or a photo worthy of an Insta feed that screams summer.

Legends, Thrills, and Floating Dresses

And just like any magical place, Malleval has its own legend that gives you chills. It's about Lorette, a young shepherdess trapped by a rather persistent lord. To escape him, she is said to have jumped from the top of the waterfall. He followed her, shouting “Mal va!” (hence the name of the village). But here’s the final twist: Lorette miraculously survived, suspended by her dress. Romantic, tragic, a bit dramatic… just everything we love.

If you’re looking for a cool and authentic getaway this summer, Malleval checks all the boxes. Until September 1st, the local tourist office is offering free guided tours every morning at 11 a.m. It’s a great opportunity to uncover all the hidden gems of the village and dive into its stories. We do recommend giving them a quick call beforehand—better safe than sorry in the countryside, as schedules can change!
