Starting this autumn, reaching the Mediterranean from Lyon becomes (almost) child’s play. The company easyJet is launching a new direct route between Lyon and Nice starting October 26. Two flights a week are scheduled, departing on Mondays and Fridays from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry airport. It’s a quick option that gets you to the Côte d’Azur in just an hour of flying, compared to over five hours by train or car.

With this new route, easyJet is targeting both getaways and business trips. The plan is simple: round trips designed to make the most of short stays. Depart on Friday, return on Monday, or the other way around. All starting from just 40 euros for a one-way ticket, in true low-cost tradition. Perfect for catching the sun!

for the Lyonnais in search of sunshine, as well as the professionals juggling between two major metropolises in southern France.

A quick alternative… but it raises questions

This new route is part of a larger trend of increasing air traffic in Lyon. With nearly 3 million passengers expected to travel to and from Lyon in 2025, the airline is clearly strengthening its local presence. At the end of the year, easyJet was already offering 56 routes from Lyon-Saint-Exupéry. This new destination complements a rapidly expanding network, with eight more openings planned in France.

While the time savings are undeniable, the question of carbon footprint remains in the background. Connecting Lyon to Nice in an hour is tempting. But it’s not necessarily neutral for the environment, especially compared to more sustainable rail alternatives. It’s a classic dilemma at a time when regional air travel is starting to grow again.
