Nestled on a rocky spur overlooking the Burgundy countryside at nearly 500 meters above sea level, this village seems to be literally frozen in time.

About two hours' drive from Lyon, this little gem, listed among The Most Beautiful Villages of France, offers a spectacular panorama upon arrival. Cobblestone streets, ancient houses, and medieval fortifications create a setting that feels more like a film set than just a village.

An exceptionally preserved medieval heritage

Founded in the 12th century, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois experienced its golden age between the 14th and 16th centuries. At that time, the village held a strategic position.

What makes this village even more fascinating is its incredible contrast between its fame and its size. In 2022, there were only 81 residents in Châteauneuf-en-Auxois. A tiny population for such an iconic place. And yet, the village is bursting with life. Several restaurants, guesthouses, and artisan workshops welcome visitors all year round. It's the perfect opportunity to turn a simple heritage stroll into a delightful culinary and cultural getaway in the heart of Burgundy. Access is relatively easy from Lyon, especially thanks to its proximity to the ... ="whitespace-normal">Autoroute A6. A little stop that is definitely worth the detour during a weekend or a road trip.

Magical Sunset and Movie-Like Scenery

Perched on its rocky peak, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois overlooks a typical landscape of Burgundy. From the ramparts or the small terraces of the village, your eyes can wander across the surrounding plains and the peaceful Canal de Bourgogne winding through the valley. The spectacle becomes even more breathtaking at sunset. Facing west, the village transforms into a natural balcony overlooking the golden lights of the Burgundy countryside, particularly stunning in the autumn.

With its medieval alleys and a castle that looks like it's straight out of a historical painting, Châteauneuf-en-Auxois has also caught the eye of cinema.
