It's hard not to be left speechless when discovering the Abbey of Hautecombe for the first time. Perched on the shores of Lake Bourget, the largest natural lake in France, this impressive white building seems to rise directly from the waters. With its monumental architecture and beautifully preserved natural surroundings, the site feels like it was made for the big screen.

Located in Savoie, in the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, this abbey is considered one of the most beautiful heritage gems in the area. However, it remains relatively unknown to many visitors who often favor more publicized destinations. This is a mistake, as the location beautifully combines charm, history, and a sense of escape.

A fascinating history that spans centuries

The royal abbey of Hautecombe has a past that is both rich and eventful. Founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, it quickly became a significant religious site during the Middle Ages. Several popes stayed here over the centuries, and some, like Celestine IV and Nicholas III, even came from this community. But like many historic monuments in France, the abbey has faced its fair share of turbulence. A gradual decline and changes in orders.religious then partial destruction during the French Revolution deeply marks the site.

We had to wait until the 19th century to see its resurgence. King Charles-Felix of Sardinia then undertook a grand restoration to make it the official necropolis of the House of Savoy. Even today, the abbey houses the tombs of many sovereigns and members of this prestigious dynasty.

A UNESCO site

ESCO between heritage and prehistoric remains

What makes Hautecombe even more special is that its history goes back long before the abbey was built. The site is part of the famous prehistoric pile-dwelling sites in the Alps, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2011. Thousands of years before the monks, people were already living here in houses built on stilts above the water. These remains, dating back several millennia before our era, bear witness to the ancient human occupation of the shores of Lake Bourget.

Today, visitors can explore the abbey church, the gardens, the king's terrace, the Marie-Christine tower, and the royal apartments. To extend the wonder, a detour to the spectacular belvedere of Mont du Chat offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Lake Bourget and the surrounding peaks.
