The Losses of the Valserine, a Masterpiece Shaped by Water

We've all seen waterfalls. But a true mineral labyrinth carved into the rock over millions of years? That’s a whole different story! Head to Ain, near Bellegarde-sur-Valserine, to discover the impressive losses of the Valserine, a natural site as spectacular as it is little-known. Here, the water has literally sculpted the landscape like an artist on a creative spree.

The result is a fascinating canyon made up of faults, giant pots, chasms, and completely mesmerizing limestone sculptures. In some places, the river disappears beneath the rock before reappearing a few meters later in a mineral chaos that almost resembles a sci-fi set. From above, some even see the skeleton of a giant dinosaur. Well, personally, we'd prefer to avoid running into a T-Rex while hiking, but the image is honestly not exaggerated.

The first “Wild River of France”

If the Valserine is so impressive, it’s not just for its lunar landscape. This river, born in the Jura, is known primarily for the exceptional purity of its waters. In 2014, it became the very first river to receive the label “Wild Rivers of France.”

e”, a distinction that rewards rivers preserved from any major artificialization.

In other words: here, nature does whatever it wants. And you can really see it. Between the limestone cliffs, the clear streams, and the particularly rich biodiversity, this site offers a rare immersion in an almost untouched environment. The best time to experience the Valserine's sinkholes is in spring.

or autumn, when the river's flow reveals the full power of the spectacle. In the middle of summer, the experience may be a bit less impressive if the water is more subdued.

An adventure easily accessible from Lyon

The craziest part of this story? This scenery worthy of Iceland or New Zealand is easily reached by train from Lyon. Every day, several TER trains connect the Part-Dieu station to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine in just 1 hour and 26 minutes. By car, the distance is the same. Once you arrive, a leisurely hike of about 2.4 kilometers allows you to explore the area along the river, the bridges, and various natural viewpoints. Plan for around two hours to fully enjoy the trail and admire the incredible geological formations.

Just a little heads up: the ground can get slippery when it rains, and the river can rise quickly. But with a bit of caution, this nature getaway is definitely one of the most beautiful trips you can take around Lyon. And honestly, it’s a nice change from those Sundays stuck in traffic!
