A huge natural amphitheater in the heart of Chartreuse

It looks like a fantasy set lost between Jurassic Park and The Lord of the Rings. Just 1.5 hours from Lyon, the Cirque de Saint-Même offers an absolutely amazing natural spectacle in the heart of the Chartreuse massif, in Savoie. Nestled in the town of Saint-Pierre-d'Entremont, this immense natural amphitheater, sculpted by glacial and fluvial erosion, immediately impresses with its monumental limestone cliffs and incredibly preserved vegetation.

Here, the hero of the landscape is called the Guiers Vif. This mountain stream flows through the cirque, springing from several sources before rushing down the slopes as a series of stunning waterfalls. The sound of the water echoes throughout the valley, turning the stroll into a timeless escape.

Stunning waterfalls accessible by hiking

The Cirque de Saint-Même is especially famous for its waterfalls, giving the place a postcard-perfect alpine feel. Among the most well-known are the Cascade des Sources and the Grande Cascade, which attract hikers, photographers, and anyone dreaming of a slice of unspoiled nature far from the concrete of Lyon.

Great news: you don't have to be an ultra-trail runner to enjoy it! The highlight hike of the site is accessible to everyone, taking about two hours of walking to discover the upper and lower waterfalls. Throughout the route, walkways and viewing platforms let you admire the torrents and cliffs safely. And honestly, it's hard not to pull out your phone every thirty seconds because the views are simply breathtaking.

A preserved paradise both summer and winter

What also makes the magic of the Cirque de Saint-Même is its completely protected environment. Located in the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park, the site is home to remarkable biodiversity, including chamois, peregrine falcons, and preserved alpine flora.

Even in the heart of summer, the place maintains a peaceful atmosphere thanks to regular access and facilities designed to minimize the impact of tourism. In the summer, visitors come for the hiking trails and the refreshing waterfalls. In winter, the frozen waterfalls create a decor that's almost unreal, worthy of a Nordic film.
