Perched on a hill in Beaujolais, Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin has that instantly addictive charm of villages you discover "just for a stroll"... only to find yourself wanting to stay all weekend. Just 45 minutes from Lyon, this commune surrounded by vineyards and rolling trails offers a true breath of fresh air with landscapes that sometimes remind you of the famous Tuscan hills.

The village was born in 1808 from the merger of Montmelas and Saint-Sorlin-le-Puy. Two communities joined forces to create one of the most peaceful and picturesque spots in Beaujolais today. Here, time seems to slow down. Strollers come for both the hiking trails and the almost timeless atmosphere that hangs in the alleys and rural paths.

A spectacular medieval castle that overlooks the entire valley

It's impossible to talk about Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin without mentioning its impressive castle. Standing proudly at the top of the village, this ancient fortress from the 10th century looks like it stepped right out of a medieval movie. With its six crenellated towers, its battlemented keep, and its restored polygonal silhouette, it’s a true sight to behold.

The Château de Montmelas, from the 19th century and a contemporary of Viollet-le-Duc, literally dominates the entire landscape.

This place also has quite a crazy story: it has been owned by the same family since 1566. Yes, while some misplace their AirPods after just three weeks, others have kept a family château for nearly five centuries. Surrounding the building, the views are spectacular. From the heights, the vista stretches over the Rhône Valley and can even reach Mont Blanc when the sky is clear.

Between Roman Heritage and Strolls through the Heart of the Vineyards

Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin is more than just its castle. While wandering around, you'll also come across the stunning Saint-Bonnet chapel, a magnificent Romanesque building from the 12th century, classified as a Historical Monument. Its square bell tower once housed a Chappe telegraph that enabled communication between Quincié and Theizé at the end of the 18th century.

But the true luxury here might just be the silence, the paths lined with vines, and that rare feeling of being completely somewhere else while Lyon is just a few kilometers away. A mini Tuscany without a plane, without a passport, and with Beaujolais instead of Chianti. Honestly, the deal is pretty solid.
