Harlem Lands at the Bourse du Travail in Lyon

After 4 decades away, the iconic New York ballet Dance Theatre of Harlem is making its grand return to France as part of an extraordinary tour that stops in Bordeaux, Roubaix, Paris, and Lyon from February 11 to March 7, 2026. What better place to welcome such a comeback than the Bourse du Travail?

Born in 1891 as a hub for the Lyon labor movement, this legendary venue, rich in history, provides a symbolic setting for this groundbreaking company straight from New York. The meeting of Harlem and Lyon promises to be magical.

A ballet born in the streets of Harlem

The story gives you chills. In 1969, right in the midst of the civil rights movement, Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem with a revolutionary idea: ballet belongs to everyone. Back then, it was all about introducing underprivileged children from the Harlem neighborhood to classical ballet and opening the doors of dance wide to the African American community. Nearly 60 years later, the company has become one of the boldest in the world.

28 Dancers, Two Programs, No Limits

On stage, it's a captivating blend of classical rigor and contemporary creativity, influenced by Afro-American styles. Bach, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead, James Blake: the repertoire boldly crosses genres. Two programs will be presented alternately by the 28 dancers of the troupe. It's a fantastic chance to (re)discover a vision of ballet that breaks all the rules.
