France is the world champion of pastry! Two years ago, the Lyonnais chef Nabil Barina had already amazed the world by winning the first ever World Tiramisu Championship. In 2023, he returned, but this time as the Captain of the French Team, to shine in another prestigious category of pastry. On October 14 and 15, 2023, the World Pastry, Chocolate, and Ice Cream Championship was held at the international exhibition of the hotel and catering industry, Host Milano in Milan.

A Lyonnais at the top of the world of pastry

Under the leadership of Chef Nabil Barina, the French team composed of chefs Amaury Lafonta, Charaf Eddine Chrikioui, and Luc Baudin had to work with the theme "The Music of your Nation". The team made the bold decision to represent "The French Touch", the popular movement of the 80s that left an indelible mark on the world's music culture, led by the famous Daft Punk. The program included: a chocolate and praline sculpture, a sugar and modern cake sculpture, a single portion pastillage and ice sculpture.

And the results speak for themselves. The French team, led by Nabil Barina, not only brought the cup home, but also clinched the title of “Best ice cream dessert in the world” at this competition. A doubly delicious victory that enhances France's reputation in the international pastry world and also marks a sweet revenge for the Lyon native Nabil Barina. In 2017, he finished 4th in the same competition.
