Established in 1864, the Grand Café des Négociants remains one of the most iconic cafés in Lyon, even though it has lost some of its former glory. Once a favorite hangout for "all of Lyon," this brasserie in the Cordeliers area no longer attracts the crowds it used to, thanks to an aging image and a Presqu'île transformed by traffic restrictions. Despite its historical charm, the establishment hasn't managed to regain its status as a must-visit spot.

An institution in search of a fresh start
Since 2006, the establishment has been in the hands of Philippe Pelisson, former footballer Éric Abidal, and agent David Venditelli. But the Covid-19 crisis and drop in attendance have weakened the finances. As a result, the owners decided to turn the page and put the establishment up for sale, leaving uncertainty about its future.

The Nobile Empire on the Rise
According to information from Lyon People, the Grand Café des Négociants has found a buyer from the Lonobile family. Well-known restaurateurs among the people of Lyon, they have built a real little empire with their trattorias, cafés, and Italian restaurants under the Nobile banner, particularly in Presqu'île and the 7th arrondissement. This news, if confirmed, would mark a turning point in the history of the place.

What does the future hold for Les Négos?
We still don't know what Jean Lonobile and his team have in store for this legendary café. Will it be modernized? Will they stay true to its historical spirit? Or perhaps a fresh concept inspired by Italy? The mystery remains for now, as the price of the sale has not been revealed. One thing is for sure: the story of Les Négociants, which is over 150 years old, is far from over.
