A revised indemnity lowered since 2020
As soon as he took charge of the city, Grégory Doucet decided to reduce his salary to embody a form of political sobriety. While his predecessor earned up to 8,268 euros gross per month, the Green mayor chose to set his indemnity around 7,500 euros gross per month. This is a symbolic gesture, but also a political one, fitting into a trend seen among several Green elected officials in France, notably in Strasbourg and Poitiers.
In a city like Lyon, the third largest in France, the mayor's remuneration is strictly regulated by law. In theory, a mayor of a large city can earn up to about 8,344 euros gross per month, including additional allowances. However, the municipal council has the authority to set a lower indemnity. And here, the message is clear: to demonstrate a more measured management of public funds.

Controlled Representation Expenses
Beyond his salary, the mayor also has a budget dedicated to his representation expenses… which he uses sparingly. Set at 3,000 euros per year, this budget covers certain official events or invitations. However, between 2020 and 2025, only a small portion of this amount was actually used. Out of the 18,000 euros available during this period, just over 4,000 euros were spent. This figure stands in contrast to some more generous practices seen elsewhere. Even in 2024, the most "spending" year, the total remained controlled with just under 2,900 euros committed.
Behind these numbers lies a whole vision of the role: one of a mandate that is less ostentatious, yet still strategic.
While the salary may seem comfortable, it is still proportional to the responsibilities of a mayor in a metropolis like Lyon. Between crisis management, political decisions, and structural choices for over 500,000 residents, this role goes far beyond just the matter of pay. In a context where transparency has become a key criterion, maintaining measured financial choices sends a strong signal.
