While the latest report from the Rhône prefecture announced a significant decrease in crime in Lyon during the first six months of 2024 (-14.6% in burglaries, -37.3% in vandalism and arson, and -13.6% in vehicle thefts), the latest ranking from Valeurs Actuelles of the safest and most dangerous cities in France seems to say otherwise.
Lyon and Vénissieux in the top 10
Indeed, Lyon ranks among the most dangerous cities in France, taking the 5th place in this rather daunting list. Right alongside it, Vénissieux also makes a notable entrance into the top 10, landing an unflattering 10th place. At the top of the ranking, the unchanged trio from last year remains: Lille, Saint-Denis, and Marseille, closely followed by Bordeaux, a newcomer in 4th place after bumping Paris down to the 7th spot. Grenoble, recently voted the most pleasant city to live in the world, ranks in...6th position of the most dangerous cities in France...
So, what do we think about these rankings ? With the reassuring numbers from the prefecture and the top 10 "hottest" cities in France, it can be a bit confusing. One thing is for sure: the perception of safety is a sensitive topic in Lyon, and this kind of ranking isn’t likely to ease any worries... In the meantime, we stay alert and continue to enjoy the charms of our beautiful city, all while keeping an eye on our belongings !
