Lyon, the bad student in class
At the top of the list of cities where inhabitants are the most impolite, we find Lyon, which displays a terrible rudeness score of 9.41 out of 10. Marseille (9.26) and Nice (9.08) are not far behind, ranking 2nd and 3rd respectively. In Lyon, the most frequently observed impolite behaviors reveal a predominance of the digital sphere over courtesy.
Being absorbed in your phone in public is at the top of the list of rudeness, closely followed by not picking up after your dog and the tendency to be loud in public. Failing to say a simple "thank you" to the driver when getting off public transportation completes the picture.
Luckily, not all cities are equal in this rudeness chart. Toulouse, Strasbourg, and Rennes emerge as bastions of politeness, positioning themselves as the most polite cities in France. When asked about the reasons behind this persistent stereotype, nearly a third of those surveyed believe that the frequent use of colorful language by the French contributes to this reputation, which may not be entirely unwarranted. They think that swear words and sometimes colorful expressions help shape the image of a population not particularly inclined towards politeness.
