When we think of Lyon, we imagine the traditional Lyonnais restaurants, the secret passages called traboules, the lively evenings along the banks of the Rhône... Not really a picture of an unwelcoming city! However, according to a study conducted by Preply, a language learning site, it seems that not all visitors are charmed by the welcome they receive in Lyon. After being named the rudest city in France, Lyon ranks 10th on the list of the least welcoming cities in the world, alongside Medellin (Colombia), Mumbai (India), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and even Accra (Ghana) which takes the title of the least welcoming city.

Lyon and Paris, different fortunes

Besides the warmth of human interactions, other criteria were taken into account by Preply to establish this unflattering ranking: the percentage of visitors willing to return after their first stay, the general well-being of the inhabitants, and the acceptance of diversity.it. Areas where Lyon could, it seems, do better to attract tourists back into its heart.

When it comes to the most welcoming cities in the world, we find Toronto (Canada) in first place, followed by Sydney (Australia) and Edinburgh (Scotland). It is worth noting that Paris ranks 14th. Despite this ranking, Lyon does not lose its charm. The city remains a gastronomic gem, rich in exceptional historical heritage and a vibrant cultural life. And as any good Lyonnais will say: "Sometimes you have to get past the first impression to discover the true treasures of our beautiful city."
