Lyon, a city where words are carefully chosen

Preply is a platform that connects over 32,000 teachers with thousands of learners in 180 countries. After revealing that Lyon is among the 10 least welcoming cities in the world, Preply embarked on a mission as ambitious as it is fun: to discover which cities residents love to chat in. They surveyed over 1,500 residents from 15 of the largest cities in France. The criteria? Daily behaviors like thanking someone who opens a door, chatting with friends or acquaintances met by chance, and discussing current events.

Results that speak volumes (or not)

With a score of 40/100, Lyon ranks 5th among the least talkative cities in France. Only Rouen, Reims, Rennes, and Dijon (the grand winner of discretion) surpass us.In this ranking of verbal tranquility. Marseille, true to its reputation of sunny and warm city, takes the first place with an impressive score of 96.7, followed by Bordeaux, Montpellier, Strasbourg and Lille.

Aside from this ranking, the Preply survey reveals some interesting facts about the conversation habits of the French: the most talkative professions are those of marketing managers, real estate agents, and recruiters; on average, the French speak to 5.5 people per day for pleasure or leisure; at work, the most frequent exchanges are informal discussions (greetings, coffee breaks, chit-chat about the weekend...).

So, why is Lyon so discreet? Perhaps it is due to our reserved and elegant side, or simply a preference for quality conversations rather than quantity. After all, discretion has its charm and our conversations, although rare, are often fascinating and full of substance.
