The Presqu'île of Lyon is gently but surely transforming into a calmer and more breathable city, although it has become a bit more challenging to navigate by car. Since its launch in June, the famous ZTL (Traffic Limited Zone) has been making waves.Imit(e) is gradually setting up its markers, and here we go, we’re shifting into high gear: two automatic checkpoints will indeed be put into operation this Monday, July 28, as Lyon Mag explains. It's the Metropolis announcing this, and let's just say they have no plans to go backwards.
Already 17,000 validated rights holders
These two urban guardians stand tall on Gentil Street, on the Rhône side, and on Port du Temple Street, on the Saône side. Their mission will be to filter motorized traffic in the heart of the city center, between 1 PM and 6 AM. In simple terms, if you don’t have your pass – meaning an access authorization – forget about a smooth crossing during those hours. Good news for those concerned: there are already over 17,000 of them!have a valid access. And what about the others? There's still time to submit requests… or switch your mode of transport.
The pedagogy of the moment... for the summer!
No need to panic just yet: pedagogy remains the keyword, at least until the end of summer. The police, clearly visible in the area, are mainly focused on prevention. The only exception to this temporary kindness is Grenette Street, exclusively reserved for buses, where fines can rain down without warning.
With this first activation of barriers, Lyon is clearly shifting gears in its ambition to transform the city center into a pedestrian haven. Stay tuned… or find a way around.
