2030 Winter Olympics in Lyon: We Finally Know Where the Olympic Village Will Be Located

The suspense is over. The future Olympic village for the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will not be built in Lyon Confluence, but on the banks of the Saulaie, in Oullins-Pierre-Bénite. A strategic decision that confirms the major role of the Lyon metropolis in organizing the French Alps 2030 and should accelerate the transformation of an entire neighborhood.

After several weeks of waiting, the Organizing Committee for the 2030 French Alps Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (COJOP) has officially made its decision. Meeting this Monday, August 3rd, it approved the establishment of the Olympic village in the Saulaie area, in Oullins-Pierre-Bénite. A decision that definitively rules out the bid put forward by the City of Lyon, which wanted to welcome athletes in the Confluence district.

This choice comes just weeks after the validation of the events map and further clarifies the organization of the Winter Games, which will greatly enhance the reputation of the Lyon metropolitan area.

A neighborhood in full transformation that checks all the boxes

The Saulaie was chosen because the site best met the requirements set by COJOP. Project strength, secure timeline, architectural quality, environmental ambitions

and integration into the territory were among the main evaluation criteria. Already engaged in a vast urban renewal operation, the area has a well-advanced development project backed by experienced stakeholders.

For the organizers, the arrival of the Olympic village represents a unique opportunity to accelerate the neighborhood's transformation while leaving a lasting legacy long after the closing ceremony. The future village must also offer exemplary welcome conditions, for both Olympic and Paralympic athletes, with infrastructure designed to guarantee complete accessibility.

The Lyon metropolis at the heart of the 2030 Winter Games

Even though the mountains will host snow disciplines, Lyon and its metropolis will play a central role in ice sports events. The Décines-Charpieu Arena, the Chassieu Exhibition Park and the Tony-Garnier Hall will host most of the competitions concerned.Athletes will also be able to train at the Charlemagne ice rinks, located in Lyon's 2nd arrondissement, and Baraban, in the 3rd. With the Olympic village set up in Oullins-Pierre-Bénite, the metropolis is further cementing its role as a hub for the 2030 Winter Games and is preparing to host one of the decade's biggest sporting events.
