It all starts in 2018, when a family from Villeurbanne, consisting of two parents and three children, finds themselves without housing. Alarmed by this situation, the principal of the Anatole-France school rallies the parents of students. Together, they form the collective Des Clefs pour Toi(t) to prevent this family from sleeping on the street.
For several years, emergency solutions have helped them cope, but never really provided true stability. A meeting with the national association Toit à Moi, specialized in purchasing housing for people in severe insecurity, marks a turning point. The idea then emerges to acquire an apartment that will allow this family to rebuild their lives in dignified conditions.
An apartment that will help multiple families over the years

This mobilization comes at a particularly worrying time in the Lyon metropolitan area. More than 12,000 households are currently facing some form of housing exclusion. Since the beginning of 2025, the Samu Social 69 has recorded over 2,800 people, including 471 children, living on the street, in a tent, or in their vehicles.
After Lyon, Villeurbanne is the municipality most affected by this residential insecurity. Between 2021 and 2024, the number of children left without housing solutions despite calls to the 115 line has skyrocketed by 120%. In light of this reality, the initiative led by Villeurbanne’s residents shows that a collective effort can sometimes offer much more than just a roof: a genuine chance to start over.
