Attention, regulars of the « metro-work-without-a-ticket ! This free ride is about to get much more expensive. Sytral Mobilités, the authority in charge of public transport in Lyon, has just announced an increase in fines for not having a transport ticket on the TCL network. The goal? Clearly stated: to crack down on an increase in fraud, especially on buses (17.2%) and trams (12.4%). But don’t panic, tickets aren’t going up to €10; however, if you get caught without one, the bill will rise. On July 10, the entire action plan to combat fraud, which includes raising fines, will be proposed for voting by the elected officials during the board meeting. The fine will increase from €60 to €70 if you pay directly with the inspector, and from €110 to €120 if you say «I’ll take care of that later» and pay within three months. So, let's just say, procrastinating will cost you!

Towards a threefold increase in checks on the TCL network
But the increase in fines is just the first step. Bruno Bernard, president of the Lyon Metropolis and Sytral Mobilités, has announced a real action plan against fraud by 2030. On the agenda: tripling the checks, doubling the plainclothes teams… In short, you'll have fewer and fewer chances to slip through the cracks, even with that relaxed look of someone pretending to sleep.

This firmer policy, embraced as such, aims to defend fairness among users, and especially to limit the financial losses caused by fraud — because spoiler alert: a ticket not paid for is a network that struggles. So it's better to take out your card, validate your ticket… or risk turning a €2 ride into a painful memory costing €120.
