Winter has definitely not shown its last hand. After an initial snowy wave in December, January kicks off with a bang as the cold and snow return to the Rhône. Weather France has placed the department under a yellow cold alert on Sunday, January 4th, and Monday, January 5th, with negative temperatures expected throughout the week. At the same time, several French departments are shifting to an orange alert for snow and ice, signaling a firmly established winter period.
The first snowflakes expected as early as Monday evening
Snow is set to make its debut on the evening of Monday, January 5th. The first areas affected will be Tarare, where the thermometer could drop to as low as -4°C. During the night, the snowflakes may then spread to Thizy and Trades, while the entire department will experience severe overnight frosts. A serious teaser of the polar atmosphere that's expected in the days to come.

It's Tuesday morning that things are getting more interesting for the people in Lyon. Météo-France is predicting snowfall in many areas of Rhône, including Belleville, Villefranche-sur-Saône, Neuville-sur-Saône, L'Arbresle... and possibly Lyon too. Other municipalities like Soucieu-en-Jarrest or Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coize might also see some snowflakes fall, with a potential return of snow in the evening in certain northern areas of the department.
A broader episode mid-week
The night from Wednesday to Thursday could mark the peak of this winter episode. Snowfall is forecasted for almost all of Rhône, except for Lyon according to the latest predictions. By Thursday morning, the situation will evolve towards a rain-snow mix in several areas, particularly Beaujeu, Tarare, L'Arbresle, and Pusignan, indicating a gradual warming.
