This weekend is shaping up to be electrifying in Lyon and the Rhône! After a spike of 32°C on Friday and Saturday, the sky will suddenly become overcast on Sunday morning. The forecasts from Météo-France are predicting widespread thunderstorms, sometimes intense, across the entire region. Thunder rumbles, heavy rains, and gusts of wind will chase away the summer sunshine with a bang!

Particularly vulnerable areas

According to the Keraunos observatory, the intensity of the storms will be more pronounced in the southern Rhône and the northwestern Isère. The Vienne area is noted as particularly vulnerable. Hail episodes are not out of the question, confirming a classic end-of-summer scenario where accumulated heat and disrupted flows lead to a surge in atmospheric instability.

Temperatures in free fall

The mercury will drop more than 8 degrees over the course of 24 hours. While Lyon will enjoy a high of 24°C at the peak of the day, the northern part of the department will stay below 20°C, especially around Thizy and Trades. This marks a sharp contrast to the previous days, which were almost unseasonably warm.

Return to calm starting Monday

While Sunday will be filled with lightning, peace will gradually return in the evening. Starting Monday, a few sunny spells will come back, but the rest of the week is expected to be more autumn-like, with a persistent trend of rain and falling temperatures. So, folks in Lyon and the Rhône area will need to put away their sunglasses and bring out their umbrellas and mid-season jackets.
