On Wednesday, March 18th, the Saint-Martin-la-Plaine Zoo announced some news that touched the hearts of keepers and visitors alike: Pamela, the oldest gorilla, passed away at the age of 49. This is a remarkable age for a gorilla, but more importantly, she lived an extraordinary life that profoundly impacted the Loire park. Having been there for decades, she became much more than just an animal: she was a symbol, a living memory, and almost a family figure for all those who grew up alongside her.

A touching story of survival and rebirth
Her story begins under tragic circumstances. Still a baby, Pamela witnessed her family being decimated by poaching in Cameroon. She is part of a small group of gorillas saved just in time by Pierre Thivillon and Éliane Thivillon, a French couple dedicated to animal protection. In 1978, when no sanctuary existed yet, they decided to give her a second chance by bringing her back to the Loire. A foundational choice that gave rise to what would become one of the most respected zoological parks in France.

Over the years, Pamela has created a life in the park, especially with her companion Tam-tam. Together, they will have two little ones, Digit and Gincko. But the story takes an unexpected turn: rejected by their mother, the two young gorillas will ultimately be raised by the Thivillons themselves, further strengthening this unique bond between humans and animals. It's an unusual, almost romantic relationship that highlights the complexity and sensitivity of these great primates.
The end of an era for the park
The last survivor of the gorillas rescued in the 1970s, Pamela carries with her a precious heritage. In recent months, Pamela's health had declined, particularly due to degeneration of the vertebrae. Her passing marks a turning point: she was the last representative of a generation.Rescue of gorillas saved from trafficking in the 70s. In a message filled with emotion, the Saint-Martin-la-Plaine Zoo reflects on "a precious part of the park's history" that is leaving with her.
