It may not look like much, quietly positioned between two plane trees by the Saône, but it’s bound to make some tires squeal. Since Friday night to Saturday, a construction radar has been operational at the junction between the Tilsitt and Maréchal-Joffre quays, right at the height of Franklin Street, as explained by Le Progrès. It’s a one-way stretch that anxious drivers rushing to Perrache know quite well, but the City and the Metropolis are keeping a close watch. Because beneath its calm appearance as a riverside road, this stretch of quay has sadly earned a reputation: as one of the most accident-prone areas in Lyon.

A quay that was the scene of a terrible tragedy in 2022

It was here, in August 2022, that Iris and Warren, two teens on scooters, lost their lives after being struck by a private ambulance. Since that tragedy, the pressure has not eased. Requests for checks have poured in, accompanied by letters to the prefecture, urging the need for a radar to deter reckless drivers. And it’s finally happened! The prefect of Rhône, after discussions with the interministerial delegate for road safety, has secured the installation of this first temporary device.

But beware, this temporary radar is just a taste of what’s to come. It signals the upcoming arrival of a permanent system aimed at calming traffic in the long run.this ultra-sensitive sector. No more excess zeal at the docks: at 30 km/h, the highway code is non-negotiable. Consider yourself warned.
