You’ll have to cross Vaise off your summer swimming plans! While the thermometer in Lyon is flirting with uncomfortable temperatures and the queues outside the Rhône pool look like a rave party at 40°C, the City has made a decision: the Vaise pool won’t reopen until the school year. The reason? Modernization work began in June 2024 for a budget of 7 million euros, originally set to finish in May 2025. But, as often happens with public projects, delays are piling up. The outcome: no swimming, no diving, and certainly no freestyle for the residents of the 9th district and surrounding areas until September.
Construction delays, rising prices...and a heatwave
This news comes at a particularly unfortunate time, just a few weeks after announcing price increases for municipal swimming pools in Lyon. Now it will cost you 4 euros for a single entry (up from 3.40 before), and up to 32 euros for a ten-entry pass, which is quite a jump.
and by 28%. Even the free entry has been cut back: now it only applies to kids under 4, down from 6 before. In short, things are getting heated – both literally and financially – for swimmers in Lyon. While the capital of Gaul is suffocating under the heat, this extended closure is really grinding some gears. With Vaise closed, rising prices, and few alternatives to cool off without crossing the city, the summer is shaping up to be clammy and long for swimming enthusiasts.
