The Monplaisir Pool, closed since 2014, will never open its doors again. Built in the 1930s, this municipal pool has been part of the Lyon landscape for nearly a century. However, due to advanced deterioration and current standards that can't be met, the decision has been made: the site will be demolished by 2032. This announcement was confirmed by the mayor of the 8th district, definitively marking the end of a place filled with memories for several generations of Lyon residents.
A new pool… elsewhere in the neighborhood
Despite several attempts, renovating the pool has never been feasible. The reopening project, once considered, was not included in the participatory budget for 2022. The reasons? Unsuitable dimensions and a structure too deteriorated to meet current requirements.
The City of Lyon has decided on a more realistic solution: turning the page instead of attempting a costly and uncertain renovation. While the Monplaisir pool takes its bow, the neighborhood won’t be left without aquatic facilities. A new infrastructure is already under construction near the Kennedy block. The future Kennedy Pool is set to open its doors in autumn 2027. This will be a more modern project, designed to meet the current needs of residents, with installations tailored to today’s use.
A new space dedicated to youth and culture
The old Monplaisir pool site won't stay empty for long. It will host an extension project for the MJC Monplaisir, withthe ambition to strengthen the cultural and community offerings of the neighborhood. A transformation that fits into a broader vision of urban development, focused on the residents and younger generations. Less swimming pool length, but more spaces for living and meeting.
