Every winter, Place Carnot hosts the charming little chalets of the Christmas market, where visitors flock to find gifts and enjoy a warm glass of mulled wine. But according to Théo Lafond, the creator of the petition, it’s time to think bigger. Place Bellecour, six times larger, could accommodate more chalets, more visitors, and give Lyon a market worthy of the great European capitals.

Goal: Revitalize the Presqu'île and Attract Visitors

For the project leader, moving the Christmas market to Bellecour could bring life back to the heart of the city. They envision a snowball effect that would benefit not only the vendors but also the nearby restaurants, hotels, and shops. The clear aim is to make Lyon an essential winter destination, with a Christmas market that can attract visitors from all around the globe.

The technical and security constraints of Bellecour

On the side of the Lyon town hall, the project faces some very real limits. Place Bellecour has technical constraints related to its structure: “There’s empty space underneath, which limits a lot of things,” explains Camille Augey, deputy for commerce, in comments shared by Radio Scoop. Already occupied by the big wheel and the Festival of Lights, the square would have a hard time supporting the additional weight of the chalets and their goods. The issue of security is also raised: a space that is too vast and difficult to control could pose serious logistical problems.

A lively debate is heating up in Lyon as Christmas approaches

For now, the Lyon Christmas market remains firmly established in Place Carnot, but the petition has sparked a discussion about its future and the image the city wants to present for this major event. With dreams of expansion and practical constraints, the Christmas market continues to fuel conversations… while waiting for the delightful aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts to fill the streets of Lyon.
