The City includes the Resistance in its urban landscape. By officially renaming the famous College footbridge, the City of Lyon pays a strong tribute to the Péju family, a key figure in clandestine engagement. Supported by the Foundation of the Resistance and the Order of Liberation, this initiative transforms a simple passageway into a vibrant symbol of bravery and heritage.

On February 23 at 5 PM, the official inauguration will bring together elected officials, historians, and family members. An hour later, in the salons of the City Hall of Lyon, there will be a presentation of the novel Échappées by Pierre Péju. It’s a moment for dialogue between history, fiction, and collective memory.

Élie Péju, a pillar of the Lyonnaise Resistance

Born in 1901, Élie Péju became one of the co-founders of the movement Franc-Tireur, often referred to as the most Lyonnais of the resistance networks.

In the Péju family, commitment is a family affair. Marthe Capelle, Marcel, Raymond, Marie-Aimée Dufour: they all actively participate in the struggle. Pamphlets, connections, sabotage, underground activities... Even when seriously injured, Raymond continued his fight. A family story where courage isn’t negotiated, but lived, day by day.

La Proue, cultural and political heritage

After the war, resistance also takes the form of books. In 1947, the family founded Librairie La Proue, on Childebert Street. For more than fifty years, this place became an intellectual beacon in Lyon, extending the spirit of freedom and debate born in the underground. By naming this bridge &l
