The party's over: parking will remain paid in August in Lyon

Starting August 1st, parking spots in Lyon will no longer be free as in previous years. It's a little revolution in the habits of Lyon's drivers. While summer used to mean freedom to park, the city hall has made a decision: this year, it's time to whip out the credit card, even in 35-degree heat. This decision was voted on in June by the city council and marks a turning point in the city's mobility policy.

A budgetary decision with purpose

Paid parking is expected to bring in about 856,000 euros to the City. Behind this measure lies a much less glamorous issue: filling a 25 million euro gap in the municipality's finances by the end of 2024. As a result, the 40,968 parking spots in the city, usually free during August, are becoming a welcome resource for local finances. And even if some drivers grumble, the logic is clear...

The budget is, indeed, unforgiving.

A little bonus… if your car is lightweight

Heavier vehicles will have to pay a higher hourly rate of 50 cents. At the same time, the city is stepping up its efforts to discourage the use of larger vehicles in the city center. SUVs and other heavy-duty vehicles will need to contribute a bit more. This is an extra signal in favor of ecological transition… and a little more space for everyone else.

Some exceptions to note

Parking remains free on Sundays and August 15th. While the costs may add up for holidaymakers and regular drivers, there are still a few breaks in this new pricing schedule. Residents with a subscription and artisan merchants are not affected.

s. But for the others, it’s time to adapt. This summer in Lyon, even parking has decided not to take a vacation.
