The little red and white bike turned green and powered by electricity is cruising like never before. Since January, with the arrival of 2,500 electric Vélo’v, the numbers are skyrocketing: 10,000 new subscribers, a record high of 56,000 rentals in a single day (on April 10th, for the curious), and bikes that are spinning almost as much as a DJ in an open-air event. On average, each bike makes 9.3 trips a day. And you don't need to be a math whiz to see that it's really taking off, just like the hills of Fourvière that we can now conquer without ending up exhausted.

So, naturally, in light of this success that would make any scooter blush, the Greater Lyon Metropolis and JCDecaux are stepping on the gas: 33 new stations will spring up in the area, including four in the very hilly 5th arrondissement. It's a strong signal for neighborhoods long forgotten by the Vélo’v plan, but also for the towns just beyond the symbolic border of the périphérique. Chassieu, Champagne, and Saint-Germain-au-Mont-d’Or are joining the party, while Vénissieux, Vaulx-en-Velin, and Saint-Fons are finally getting the long-awaited stations. Even Villeurbanne, which is often well-equipped, is getting a nice upgrade in Buers and Saint-Jean.
Making Lyon a Capital of Electric Bikes
The message is clear: soft mobility must be inclusive. “There’s no reason Vénissieux should be out of the game once you cross the périphérique,” emphasizes...e;le Bruno Bernard, president of the Metropolis. And even if the number of bikes only increases slightly (we're talking about a rise of around 6 to 7 %), JCDecaux assures that it can maintain balance with its teams of rebalancers on the ground.

The network expansion is not limitless just yet — it still depends on advertising revenue and potential agreements with the relevant municipalities — but it's on a clear path: making Vélo'v as accessible as it is convenient, and turning Lyon into a true capital of electric bikes. In short, no more excuses not to pedal, even when the hills get steep!
