Less than an hour from the heart of Lyon, a new freshwater spot is ready to make a splash. The Hurongues swimming area, located in Pomeys, will open to the public in July, after a scheduled opening in the spring. It's a little event in the Monts du Lyonnais, where swimming had been banned since 1995 for health reasons.
Back in the 80s, people used to take a dip here without a second thought. Thirty years later, the site is coming back in a modernized and regulated format, designed to blend nature and safety.
Floating pools for swimming by the rules
To truly turn the page on the bans, the municipality has completely reimagined the site. Two floating pools have been...to; installed to ensure a water quality that meets current health standards. The first one, a wading pool measuring 9x12 meters, will delight the little ones. The second, a pool of 18x18 meters with a depth of 1.20 meters, will allow for swimming in complete tranquility.
The idea is clear: to offer a secure natural swimming experience outdoors, without traveling for miles. This is a strong point, especially when heat waves are increasing and people in Lyon are seeking alternatives to overcrowded pools.
An investment of 3.6 million euros
The project represents a significant investment for the area. A total of 3.6 million euros have been committed, including between 1.2 and 1.5 million euros in grants. The Hurongues leisure area isn't just about swimming: it also includes a dam, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and a 4-star campsite.
The community of municipalities in the Monts du Lyonnais has a bold ambition: to attract a local, metropolitan, and even international clientele, in search of a natural swimming space accessible in under an hour.
