Lyon, future cycling capital of France? That's the ambition of the Metropole de Lyon and its eco-friendly president Bruno Bernard, who have just announced a 500 million euro plan to make the city 100% bike-friendly by 2030. The heart of the plan lies in the massive expansion of cycle lanes. With an ambitious goal of 2,000 km within the next two years, Lyon is set to double its existing network. This represents an investment of 282 million euros for new lanes and 20 million for infrastructure improvements, making cycling more attractive than ever.
30 km/h cities and peaceful neighborhoods
The initiative also includes expanding 30 km/h zones and creating superblocks, following inspirations from cities like Barcelona. And those existing in Barcelona. By 2026, the goal is for 2/3 of the inhabitants of the Lyon Metropolis to live in 30 km/h zones, another step towards a city where the bicycle becomes king. Another key point of the plan: massive expansion of secure parking spaces. The number of these spots will increase from 1,500 in 2019 to 15,000 by 2026. The parking spaces on racks, currently at 30,000, will quadruple to reach 120,000 spaces.
