The Republic is about to honor one of its brightest and bravest minds. On June 23rd, Marc Bloch will enter the Pantheon, 82 years after his assassination by the Gestapo in 1944. This announcement, confirmed by the circle of Emmanuel Macron, honors both the visionary historian and the committed resistance fighter. A double recognition for an extraordinary journey.
A historian who revolutionized his field
Marc Bloch was a pioneer. Born into an Alsatian Jewish family, he taught medieval history in Strasbourg from 1919 to 1936, and he profoundly renewed historical research by opening it up to sociology, geography,
to psychology and to economics. His method, transversal and bold, continues to influence generations of historians. His major work, The Strange Defeat, written in 1940, dissects with unyielding clarity the reasons behind the French collapse against Nazi Germany.

For Bloch, thought was always connected to action. A decorated captain with the Croix de guerre during World War I, he was mobilized again in 1939 and joined the Resistance around 1942-1943. Arrested in Lyon on March 8, 1944, he was imprisoned and tortured at the Montluc Prison before being executed on June 16 with 29 comrades. A tragic end, reflecting the depth of his commitment.
A highly symbolic panthéonization
His entry into the Panthéon honors a rich intellectual and moral legacy. In November 2024, during a speech in Strasbourg marking the 80th anniversary of Liberation...
Érication, Emmanuel Macron praised his “cutting lucidity,” his “boldness of ideas,” and his “physical courage.” Originally scheduled for June 16, the anniversary of his execution, the ceremony was postponed due to the G7 summit taking place in Évian-les-Bains from June 15 to 17.

Marc Bloch's family wishes for a ceremony that stays true to his values. In a letter addressed to the president, his loved ones requested that the far right, "in all its forms," be excluded from the ceremony. A strong reminder: honoring Marc Bloch also means defending the ideals for which he gave his life.
