A tragic accident claimed the life of a 72-year-old man this Saturday afternoon at a climbing gym in the Lyon Confluence shopping center. The man, an experienced climber and regular at the venue, fell 20 meters from the top of the wall after forgetting to connect to the automatic belay system.
A waiver signed by the unfortunate climber
The group Climb Up, which manages the gym, expressed its deep sadness in a statement released this Sunday. "It is with profound sadness that we confirm the tragic death of one of our climbers," the management stated, adding that "this event is a painful ordeal for our team, and we want to extend our sincerest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victim." The gym remained closed all weekend.
An investigation to determine the causes of the accident
Investigators have opened an inquiry to understand in detail the circumstances of the accident, and pSeveral questions arise regarding the safety conditions within the climbing gym, which was actually set to kick off a week dedicated to prevention and safety this Monday. According to the initial findings of the investigation, the responsibility would lie with the unfortunate climber who apparently didn't have the reflex to secure himself to the intended system. He also would have signed a waiver before starting his ascent.
