It's official: Lyon will finally have its first natural swimming site in the city next summer 2027. Lyon Métropole gave the green light on October 7th to the project led by the City, after several months of uncertainty. The destination is the Confluence dock in the 2nd district, where a seasonal and secure space will be set up right on the water.

Up to 300 people can enjoy the water

The future site will be able to welcome up to 300 swimmers at the same time. Spanning approximately 1,500 m², two uses are planned: recreational and family swimming as well as a dedicated space for sports activities. Showers, lockers, a lifeguard station and accessibility facilities are also on the agenda. The location will only operate during summer season, with set hours and appropriate supervision.

Water quality will obviously be the key to success. Regular testing will be

held in 2025 and then in 2026 delivered results deemed very satisfactory by the City. The configuration of the dock, set apart from the main port activities, was also among the reasons that led to selecting this site.

And soon a swim on the Rhône side?

Confluence might not be the only future refreshing spot in Lyon. The City is already keen to study another site on the Gerland side, even if swimming in the Rhône presents more constraints linked notably to currents and water quality. In the meantime, we're all set for summer 2027: in Lyon, rivers could finally rhyme with swimwear.
