Since 2025, a new technique for screening endometriosis has been tested in several French hospitals, including Lyon-Sud and Croix-Rousse. Developed by the Lyon-based laboratory Ziwig, this test is based on a simple saliva sample, analyzed to identify the disease in just a few days. This is a major breakthrough for a condition that usually takes an average of 7 years to be diagnosed.
A Nationally Supervised Experimentation
This test is part of the program “innovation package,” launched for three years. In total, 25,000 women aged 18 to 43 will be able to benefit from it for free, under certain conditions: already detected symptoms indicative of endometriosis, inconclusive medical imaging, and a mandatory prescription from a gynecologist at one of the 98 participating hospitals. Lyon is therefore at the forefront of this experiment.
Medical testing.
For patients who do not meet the criteria, screening is still possible, but the cost turns out to be astronomical at €839. This amount includes both the analysis and the associated hospitalization fees. It's a steep price, but it offers invaluable time savings for women seeking a clear diagnosis.
A ray of hope for patients
Endometriosis, which affects about one in ten women, is still too often underdiagnosed. With this quick, non-invasive, and promising method, Lyon confirms its role as a pioneer in the fight against this chronic disease. A breakthrough that could truly change the daily lives of patients.
