It’s a monumental project taking shape in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon. As we announced back in November 2023 and according to information from the site mesinfos.fr, Lidl is embarking on a big move: relocating its current store located on Rue de Marseille into the historic, listed Citroën garage, an iconic building known as “New Deal” dating back to 1932 and listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1992.

A place steeped in history for a big challenge

Currently, the Lidl in question is located at the foot of a building across from the garage. As it has become too cramped, the store is gearing up for a major upgrade, with plans for renovations starting in the first half of 2025 for an ambitious move in the first quarter of 2026. The new Lidl will span an impressive area...

impressive 2,300 m² (compared to the current 700 m²), but there are plenty of challenges. “This building is classified, which requires us to maintain the features of the era,” explains Thibaut Barth, regional real estate manager at Lidl France, in comments shared by mesinfos.fr. Specifically, this means that the ground, protected by strict conservation rules, cannot be covered by shelving, and the wide aisles must be designed to respect the original architecture.

An exceptional showcase for Lidl

The efforts match the importance of the location. For this unique project, Lidl is working with the architect of historical buildings to ensure the spirit of the Citroën garage is preserved. The goal? To transform this supermarket into an exceptional showcase for the brand, capable of attracting attention far beyond the borders of Lyon. “This store is...”;one of the most successful ones in Lyon, with up to 15,000 transactions at checkout per week », emphasizes Thibaut Barth. Once freed up, the current space will be dedicated to a DIY store, with the parking area also being reassigned.

And that's not all : Lidl is also considering a future location in the Gerland-Girondins neighborhood, but the details remain under wraps for now. One thing is for sure, Lidl is bold in Lyon. We'll meet in 2026 to discover this reimagined historic supermarket, blending heritage and modernity.
