One of the most iconic buildings in the 7th arrondissement is about to undergo a stunning makeover. At 35 rue de Marseille, in Lyon, the former Citroën garage—known as “New Deal” — will soon house a huge Lidl store spanning 2,500 m². Built in 1932 and listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1992, this Art Deco building is a significant part of Lyon's heritage. So, it’s safe to say that the arrival of a supermarket here isn’t going unnoticed!
A strategic move on rue de Marseille
Already present at 50 rue de Marseille, Lidl is simply changing sidewalks… but not ambition. The store is moving just a few meters down to a space that’s nearly three times bigger.
grand. Goal: to offer a next-generation store that is more spacious, more modern, and designed as a true showcase for the brand. The clear ambition is: to make this location a model that can shine well beyond the borders of Lyon. Impressive size, iconic building, strategic location… All the ingredients are gathered to leave a lasting impression starting from the opening, scheduled for Thursday, February 26.
More openings to come in the 8th and 9th
The development of Lidl in Lyon doesn’t stop there. Two more stores are set to open by June in the 8th and 9th districts. A bold rise in power is on the horizon in the capital of the Gauls, where competition among grocery stores is particularly fierce. A daring bet, almost symbolic: bringing discount shopping into a historic monument.
